Digital Doors was created as a place for me to blog and share resources that I think would be helpful for teachers integrating technology in meaningful ways in their classroom. My goal would be to write a blog post a week, but with my busy schedule, that doesn't happen. I write when I can and rely on nifty tools to help me share what I am finding when I don't have time to write.

Feed Your Mind, Take Action, End Hunger

In 2005 I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a Heifer Educators Tour to Honduras. Teachers from around the country gathered together to learn about Heifer's work in Sustainable Development and ending hunger and poverty. We also learned how we as teachers could teach about these pressing issues in our own classrooms. There were about 25 of us. We spent time learning about Heifer's work and philosophy and the Educational materials. We traveled to several locations around the country visiting projects and meeting with people in the community. We also had time to go to Copan and see the ruins there. One thing that made this a really cool trip was that we were all educators so everyone was excited about learning and sharing ideas. Experiencing Heifer Projects first hand and meeting people in the communities touched by these programs gave me complete confidence in the work of Heifer. I have lived and traveled all over the world especially in developing countries. Never have I seen such hope as saw with the people in the communities where Heifer is at work. Another really powerful piece with Heifer is their committment to education. Not only the education of the people in the communities where Heifer is at work, but education for our students and our communities about how to end hunger and poverty and care for our earth.

When I returned, I focused on education more than fund raising. I've been able to share resources with other teachers and my students have learned a lot about the world and its peoples. Here is the blog that my group created during our visit to Honduras. heiferhonduras.blogspot.com

Another opportunity that is available is the Heifer U for Educators at the Heifer Ranch in Perryville, Arkansas. I have not had the opportunity to participate in Heifer U, but I did get a chance to visit the Ranch. This is an amazing place to learn about hunger, poverty and sustainable development and the work of Heifer. One very cool thing that they have at the ranch is a program for students called Global Village. Check out this moving video created by Edutopia. I highly recommend checking out this great opportunity for Educators as well.

Please feel free to ask more questions. It really is a great opportunity.
